SmartCrete CRC aims to provide the industry with upskilled future workforce through Education and Outreach program.
At SmartCrete CRC our PhD Program is engaging in education and outreach activities that will connect university academics and industry to equip the emerging workforce with new skills sets through practical, demand driven research projects. The program seeks to ensure the long-term viability of vital concrete infrastructure in Australia, which is the main goal of SmartCrete CRC.
Dr Vanissorn Vimonsatit (or Sorn) has joined SmartCrete CRC as the Education Outreach Manager under a secondment agreement with Macquarie University.
Sorn is an Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, Macquarie University and an adjunct Associate Professor at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Curtin University in Perth. Sorn has a wide range of experience in research and construction practices. Prior to joining academia, Sorn worked as a structural engineer for over 10 years in design and construction of tall concrete buildings.
Apart from her teaching and research work, Sorn is actively involved in professional societies, serving as a Regional Representative for Australasia, for International Structural Engineering and Construction Society, USA, and a Director of Bridge Engineering Institute, USA.
Her role as Education Outreach Manager is to assist members of SmartCrete CRC in cultivating industry relationships and provide a perspective in terms of program management system deliverables in all stages of project development. It is also to develop and participate in outreach activities, provide leadership, and assist members in developing student outreach activities including PACE opportunities. The aim is to inform and inspire people by engaging them in our outreach activities. Students recruited to participate in SmartCrete CRC projects are higher degree research students and Honours students in their respective courses.
Sorn and her team are developing strategy and a plan for education and outreach programs, which include community events, communities of practice, workshops, seminars, conferences, mentorships, internships, and education and training. These programs will enable disseminating new knowledge resulting from project outcomes to interested students, professionals and the public. The mentorship and internship programs will help students working on SmartCrete CRC projects develop new skills, explore career paths, gain hands-on experience, and network with professionals in the field. The education and training will provide upskilled workforces that meet industry’s needs. SmartCrete CRC is also looking to partner with TAFE to establishment training courses to develop new skills to meet requirements for industry including areas such as 3D printing and waste recycling.
Sorn is looking forward to facilitating programs that support the growth of the concrete industry.
“I am excited to be part of SmartCrete CRC to develop programs that connect people and help them gain new knowledge, understand issues faced by industry, develop new skills, and learn from experts. I believe the more we connect, the more we learn and inspire each other, which is the main aim of outreach activities”.
