Returned concrete aggregate for replacing virgin aggregate

Event details

Date and Time: 18 November 2025 (12:30pm)

Location: Online, Teams

Each year, 30 million cubic metres of ready-mix concrete is produced in Australia, with about 4%, or 1.2 million cubic metres, left unused. This concrete is returned to the plant and ultimately disposed of. The disposal process is becoming increasingly expensive and problematic, with dumping sites becoming scarce and the potential for harmful chemicals to leach into groundwater.

This November 18, 2025, we discuss an R&D project looking into turning returned concrete into a concrete aggregate. Chair Arun Arunothayan chats with Vinod Rajayogan (Holcim Australia) and Prabir Sarker (Curtin University) about their project which would reduce waste and improve circularity. The session includes a series of brief presentations followed by a Q&A, giving you the chance to share knowledge, ask questions and join the conversation.
