A report by the Business Council of Australia has pointed to the need for performance-based specifications in infrastructure design – highlighting a SmartCrete CRC project which is leading by example.

The BCA’s Building Australia’s Tomorrow  report gives recommendations on how to support Australian infrastructure to drive local, regional and national productivity.

The report discusses the infrastructure sector’s net-zero plans and progress, sharing recommendations on what work remains to be done.

The BCA has identified overspecification as a major obstacle to the uptake of materials. The recommendation for an outcomes-based approach to specifying innovative materials includes a case study: low carbon concrete for transport infrastructure (p55).

This case study discusses a SmartCrete CRC research collaboration with Transport for NSW, Cement, Concrete and Aggregates Australia and the University of Technology Sydney which is developing a low carbon concrete specifications framework that will lead the way in increasing the uptake of sustainable materials.

We would like to thank Business Council of Australia for including this important case study into the report and demonstrating what can be done to support innovation.
